BACKGROUND: In Cambodia alone, 10 million people (80% of population) are off the national electric grid. Despite large investments in large hydro projects, most rural households will not be connected for decades. Most households use dangerous and inefficient kerosene lighting, while others rely on inefficient car batteries.

PROBLEM: The lack appropriate energy resources means higher costs, more time required to gather fuel, and increased pollution and other health risks. This reduces profit and time available for economic activities;limiting the disposable income available to buy improved energy products and services. This vicious cycle perpetuates until households are given access to modern and appropriate sources of energy.

SOLUTION: Access to efficient energy services can dramatically improve people’s lives. Modern energy services can break the vicious cycle and empower households to enter a virtuous cycle, where improved energy sources free up time and money for other profitable activities. Lighting is an important first step because it provides high economic, social and environmental benefits at a low cost. By helping households get to this first step, we can empower them to enter a prosperous cycle of better access to energy increasing time for economic activity, allowing for larger disposable income.
